OUR HISTORY

NOMA NATIONAL

In 1971, a group of African American architects attending the AIA National Conference in Detroit gathered to voice the profound need for an organization dedicated to the support, development, and advancement of minority architects. This dialogue—rooted in shared experiences within design-related industries—would lead the group, along with additional founding contributors, to reconvene in the Bahamas on November 12, 1971, for the very first board meeting of the National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA).

Founded on principles of advocacy and engagement across social, political, and economic fronts, NOMA’s 3,600 national and international members strive to “speak against apathy, bigotry, intolerance, and ignorance,” and to remain committed to opposing the “abuse of the natural environment,” while advocating for the unempowered, marginalized, and disenfranchised.
